“Born Again American”-My wife and I were ringing in New Year’s Eve 2007 at the home of our old friends James Keach and Jane Seymour.I was playing James’ Johnny Cash “signature” Martin guitar and singing some of my newer songs, specifically “Orphans Of Oblivion”, a fairly dark call to civic and ecological arms. ( James had warned me that magic tended to happen when anyone picked up that guitar ). As I finished I looked up and Norman Lear was standing there. He said he had an idea for a song titled “Born Again American” and would I like to take a crack at writing it. The next day Norman’s friend Marty Kaplan e-mailed me some ideas he and Norman had been germinating. I let them settle into my consciousness and a couple weeks later I sent Norman the first strains of what has now been heard by millions.
